Sustainable Infrastructure

Sustainable infrastructure requires high-performance, durable materials that are incorporated into the built environment in designs and with construction and maintenance techniques that are cost-effective with lower environmental impacts than today’s infrastructure.   The built environment includes buildings (homes, offices, industrial), roads, tunnels, freight movement, rail networks, airports, communications networks, utilities, cyber networks, and sensor networks.  New technologies are opening up opportunities for automated construction and for incorporating both new, hybrid materials and recycled materials into infrastructure that should be evaluated for enhanced sustainability and cost effectiveness.
